When I first discovered this I thought it was pretty dumb in terms of usability. If a user see's that buttons are put in the overflow menu then they would expect other items to go there as well otherwise, they are left with...hey where'd the other things go.

I too had a WTF moment. I ran into this while developing a chapter in my book. But then i started to think about the implementation, and I think it should probably be redone. I want to take a stab at it, but the book is more pressing for me ATM. Trying to get this bish done this month.

I ended up doing the same. In all reality I still don't think it's good UI practice to show/hide anything without warning, however, if you have that much going on in such a small area it's probably hard enough to figure out and problem should be redesigned.
